Active Listening

Effective communication begins with listening. You can practice active listening by giving your full attention to others, paraphrasing to ensure understanding, and asking clarifying questions. You can almost repeat what someone has said back to you, with a question on the end, to show that you have been thoroughly paying attention to the conversation.


Provide Clarity

Ever had a conversation with somebody where you spent the majority of the time wondering what that one industry specific word that they said meant, rather than taking on board what they’re actually saying? It’s not you, it’s them! Effective communication comes from providing clarity. Try to stay away from using jargon, or abbreviations (especially the uncommon ones!) and make sure you’re using language people can understand and listen to. Clarity eliminates confusion and minimizes misunderstandings.


Embrace the Truth

Truth breeds trust. Be open and honest in your communication with your team, especially when addressing challenges or setbacks. You don’t have to air all your laundry if you don’t want to, but being truthful in your communications encourages candid conversations enabling your team to navigate obstacles effectively.


Seek Feedback

Feedback is invaluable for improving communication effectiveness. Encourage open feedback from your team and clients, and be receptive to constructive criticism. Actively seek opportunities to refine your communication skills based on feedback received.
